When Should You Decorate For Christmas?

It’s time! (Imagine Mariah Carey’s voice!)

Yes, it is officially November and that means the debate over when is the right time to decorate for Christmas has begun. Some people go all out right after Halloween, while others wait until Thanksgiving is over. This debate takes over social media every year, fueled by the iconic sound and video of Mariah “defrosting” for the holiday season. Influencers weigh in for whether or not the tree should be up this time of year.

In a poll I posted on Instagram, the results were nearly split: 48% of my followers said November is strictly for Thanksgiving, while 52% think it’s fine to start decorating for Christmas early.

Whether you’re a November 1 decorator or a December 1 decorator, the magic lies in the Christmas decorations we cherish every year. The Christmas tree might be decked out with classic red ornaments or homemade snowflakes from childhood, ribbons, tinsel, maybe some popcorn, and, of course, a radiant star or angel on top. Stockings—often the same ones we’ve had since childhood—hang above the fireplace or along the stairwell, brimming with memories of past gifts. Tiny village displays come to life, with trains circling cheerful scenes of the perfect Christmas night.

For many, Christmas decorations bring a sense of nostalgia and joy, especially after a long year. That said, Thanksgiving carries its own sense of tradition and warmth. Tables adorned with gold and red leaves, turkey baking in the oven, and pumpkin pie waiting on the counter evoke memories of family and gratitude.

Both holidays are special in their own ways, and since they fall so close together, it’s okay to start decorating early if it makes you happy. Whether your tree is already up or still in the attic, the important thing is to embrace what feels right for you.
