Unlike the halftime show, nothing defines the Super Bowl experience, and Super Bowl LIX did not disappoint. This year's performance had guests Kendrick Lamar and SZA; however, actor Samuel L. Jackson and athlete Serena Williams also took the stage.
Samuel L. Jackson started the night by taking on the role of “Uncle Sam” and providing commentary in between songs to add a narrative to the show. The show explored themes of American identity and culture. With dancers wearing red, white and blue coming together to form the American flag. Kendrick also decided to open with a teaser from his unreleased song, “Bodies,” an exciting way to grab the attention of all his fans.
Some of the other memorable songs performed include, “All of The Stars”, “DNA”, and “Not Like US”. Moreover, Kendrick’s impressive performance attracted a record audience of more than 133 million viewers, with more than 133 million people tuning in. A stand-out feature in his performance was when the 1987 Buick made an appearance. The car shares his birth year and was the same one his father drove when he brought him from the hospital. Another symbolic moment was when Serena Williams came on stage to join him in “Not Like Us”. Because they both grew up in Compton, this shared moment reflected their roots and childhood.
Kendrick Lamar's Halftime Show was not only captivating but also unforgettable. With his spectacular music and his portrayal of American identity, whoever performs next year will have a lot to work towards.
