Wearing Vs. Styling Your Clothes

By Shea Smith

Imagine this: You are looking in the mirror in defeat after trying on half of your closet. All the outfits you already wore do not feel special. Something is missing, you just can not put a finger on it. Does this scenario sound familiar? Right now, you may just be “wearing” your clothes. I am here to ensure this matter is solvable, and it is all about knowing how to style instead. Styling is how you present yourself through a unique mix of clothing items. A wonderful thing about styling is you can style things up or down. You probably have a closet full of staples; it is all about just knowing how to wear them. Let us dive in!

1. All about layering!

First, start with a base outfit: a basic black tee and your favorite pair of wide-leg jeans. Then, to instantly elevate your look, tuck your tee into your jeans and cuff the bottom of your denim. Then, layer on a jacket of any kind. If you are going for a more casual, cozy look, throw on a cardigan or sweater, tie it around your waist or wear it over your shoulders. For a more formal look, add an oversized blazer and let it rest over your shoulders. Add a platform sneaker, and you have already won half the battle.

Another base outfit is a black mini skirt and a basic shirt. Put on a pair of sheer black tights, a vest top, and knee-high boots, and you will be the most stylish girl on the block… and you have not even accessorized yet! Do not hesitate to play with shirt buttons, tuck things in, or wear items off the shoulder. It makes all the difference

2. Accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize!

Meet your new best friend! Accessories can transform any outfit. Pick two or three from this list to add to your fit.

  • Belts

  • Bracelets

  • Claw clips

  • Earrings

  • Handbags

  • Hats

  • Headbands

  • Heels

  • Leg-warmers

  • Rings

  • Scarves

  • Sunglasses

  • Tights

  • Watch

3. Hairstyles matter, too!

Even the way you style your hair can change your look. Make a statement by wearing your hair in a slicked-back pony. Or, if you have just blown out your hair, add a headband or clip your hair back half-up, half-down. Bad hair day? Easy solution! Add a baseball cap and instantly look more fashion-forward. The possibilities are endless!

With the cold weather approaching, this is a great time to start adding spice to your outfits. Happy styling!
