Looking back on the fashion trends throughout 2023, the rise in popularity of UGGs cannot be ignored. From Pinterest to TikTok, it seems that almost everybody has since secured a pair for themselves. When these boots hit the mainstream media at the start of 2023, we were all hit with a wave of nostalgia. We were reminded of the days where a pair of Bailey Bow UGG boots were the item to have.
However, the UGG boot we so fondly remember is strikingly different from the styles people seek today. In the early 2000s, there was not a platform UGG in sight and everyone wanted their boots to be taller, taller, and taller; a knee-length UGG boot was not out of the question. These preferences are the exact opposite of what is popular in 2023; now Mini UGGs are all the rage and the taller the platform, the better.
This drastic difference in preferred style brought out the DIY professional in all of us. Instead of going out and buying a brand new pair of boots or slippers, girls brought a pair of scissors to the 2009 pair of UGGs that had found a home in the back corners of closest everywhere. Seemingly overnight everyone had a new or upcycled UGG boot to pair with their favorite wide leg jeans and oversized sweaters—the coziest look for a winter day.
