The Rule Of Seven

By Taylor Morgan

In today’s world of quiet luxury and the pursuit of the “cool girl” look, one key to crafting a standout outfit is the “rule of seven.” This styling system assigns points to each item in an outfit, with a goal of reaching a total of seven points. Each item is rated at either one or two points based on its characteristics.

An item with a classic color and silhouette is worth one point. These are your basics, like a white T-shirt or traditional blue jeans. Items earn two points if they have something unique, such as an interesting color, pattern, fabric or texture.

Below is a point breakdown guide to help you build an outfit that’s both interesting and uniquely you.

Seven Point Outfit: Night on the Town

To create a chic look for a night out, aim for five essential item types. Start with a classic dark-wash, wide-leg jean, which adds one point to anchor the outfit. Next, a high-neck, ruched top introduces texture and counts for two points. A sleek black bag and a pair of patent black ballet flats add one point each. To complete the look, a gold watch and matching earrings combine for one final point. Together, these pieces add up to seven points, creating the perfect night-out ensemble.

Seven Point Outfit: Autumn Shopping Spree

This autumn outfit features the classic combination of a sweater and jeans, but with an elevated twist. The straight-leg blue jeans count as one point. The cream wool sweater, adding texture and warmth, is two points. A simple white leather bag adds one point, contrasting with two-point dark brown sneakers. Finally, a pair of gold earrings and sunglasses combine for one point, giving the outfit a polished finishing touch.
