Summertime Going Out LookBook

By Sophie Masi

Getting ready and picking out your perfect outfit when you’re going out with your friends is arguably one of the most fun parts. Curating a look that makes you feel confident and comfortable can be hard—especially with heat as a factor. Depending on where you're going, what time of day it is and the occasion, a summer going-out fit can take many forms. Here are some outfits I’d wear this summer to have a great time with my friends—and look cute doing it.

Girls Night Out in the City

If you have a big-city job or internship this summer, dressing up for a night out with your new city friends is part of the experience. Stepping up your basic going-out fit with a unique top—like a metallic one—paired with cute but comfortable heels and a classic denim skirt gives you a fashionable outfit with minimal effort. With a fresh blowout and some glowy makeup, you’re ready for a night out on the town.

Concert! (Specifically Charli XCX)

At a concert in the middle of summer, you're surrounded by hundreds of people dancing in 90-degree heat. Mini shorts and a tank top are definitely the way to go. Add a slicked-back hairstyle and a glittery smokey eye for the ultimate brat summer vibe. Throw in a pashmina if the artist gives off that energy. One thing to note: the boots are more for heel-wearing professionals. If you plan to jump around all night, consider a boot with a lower heel.

Beat the Clock (Summer Edition)

If you're going out during the day for classic weekend day drinking, comfort is key. The sun will be beating down on you all day, so keep it casual. Spice up shorts and a T-shirt with accessories to make a simple outfit stand out. Minimal makeup and keeping your hair out of your face will help you stay out longer and actually enjoy the weather.

Dress to Impress

Another city nightlife look: something one-of-a-kind. Wearing unique pieces can elevate your outfit to the next level, and you can often find them at thrift stores and flea markets. Pair with bronzy makeup and your summer tan, and you’ve got the perfect look for those hot July nights. Don’t forget your digital camera—you’ll want to capture these outfits and the memories you make with friends.

Music Festivals

Recently inspired by Coachella, festival outfits are so fun to plan—and festival season has just begun. Comfort is usually the No. 1 priority, since festivals mean long days, heat and lots of jumping around. Comfortable boots with a low heel and a light, airy top will keep you cute and comfy while dancing to your favorite artists and having the time of your life.

Your Hometown Bar

If you’re from a small town, like me, with only a bar or two, you might get a few stares if you show up in heels and a flashy top. Unfortunately, the same crowd—including a few random 40-year-old men—always seems to be there. Sometimes it's easier to play it safe by dressing down. But casual can still be cute. A graphic tee styled with jewelry and unique shoes adds flair to a simple look.
