Scream Movie Trends And Culture

By Tayler Nowak

Do you like scary movies? This iconic line from the ongoing series Scream represents different generations of what we believe scary movies to be, ongoing from 1996 when the original film was released all the way to Scream 6. The new ‘Queen of Horror’ Jenna Ortega has taken on the role as part of the sister duo with her co-star Melissa Barrera with our own generation of scary movies. In the first movie, guidelines of how scary movies work are laid out, which created an element of comedy to the movie, such as ‘there’s always a reason behind the killer’ or ‘never say you’ll be right back because you won’t’ which of course the characters still do. The original Scream also wants Syd to feel stranded and alone, a girl that can’t trust anyone and no one to save her but herself.  What does this say about 90s pop culture that the main female character is alone in this scary movie? The 90s culture clearly wants us to visualize Syd as being a strong, independent woman, although she is stranded and can’t trust other characters around her, she defies all odds and lives through all six movies. This itself is an icon of females from the 90s.

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera characters take on a new generation of what the Scream movies want to tell us. Instead of the main female characters being cut off from the rest of the world, they represent women supporting each other and that you can still survive a horror movie with your friends instead of having to run away from them. While the 90s culture showed women as needing to be independent in order to survive, the new and improved Scream movies show that this isn’t necessarily true. Our own culture today wants women to support women, showing that by doing that, we can survive (horror movies, yes) and life in general, whether it’s having your friends there to help you get through a bad breakup or supporting you through a rough day at work, they got you.

This is the  new era of scary movies, the message that all women have been waiting for in a movie genre that has depicted women as helpless and alone for generation after generation. Our generation and modern culture has screamed that women are not helpless or alone in this world and that we are working to support one another through hardships and adversity. So, this Halloween, when you find your perfect costume and go out with your girlies and ghouls for a night of iconic memories,  don’t forget that you aren’t alone;you have your friends to support you through the spooky night ahead and you look STUNNING, babe. (but just to be sure ,please don’t say ‘I’ll be right back’)
