Not Your Grandfather’s Loafers

Updated: Feb 18, 2023

If you grew up wearing a school uniform, then you’ve definitely owned a pair of pleather penny loafers before. Blister-inducing and sort of grandfatherly, I exonerated them from my own wardrobe about ten years ago. But after combing through my mixed feelings about this trend revival, I’m back on board with a loafer. They just might be the trendiest shoe this winter. Think of loafers as the dad sneaker’s corporate cousin– a little ugly in concept, but stylish with good execution.

Loafers might be a bit intimidating because of their association with business casual dress, but they are another alternative to the endless back-and-forth between your sneakers and boots. If you’re nervous about styling them, check out Alexa Chung’s instagram– her style is polished and heavily influenced by menswear (she, too, loves a good loafer).

Franco Sarto Carolynn Loafer, $62

You can never go wrong with a patent leather penny loafer. Easy to slide on when you’re running late for work, this classic loafer has a bit of a chunkier heel that adds comfort and makes them feel more on-trend. Try them with a cropped ankle jean and a blazer and channel your inner girl boss.

Platform Loafer, Lulus, $38

If you’re on the short side or love to flaunt your height, try a platform loafer. These loafers add the height of a heeled bootie or regular heels but offer slip-on comfort. If you’re not sure how to style these platforms, try them with slim cut pants or a pair of leggings and oversized vintage crewneck for a polished athletic vibe.

Loafers are a classic staple in a wardrobe, especially in corporate fashion. Adding one pair of loafers to your closet can open up so many more outfit options– so steal your granddad’s style this winter and toss some loafers into your footwear rotation.
