Fashion has always been a huge part of self expression and autonomy in our country. But as of recently, light has been shining upon the effect it has on our environment and what we can do about it, even by a Kardashian and the clothing powerhouse Urban Outfitters.
Kourtney Kardashian Barker, who we all know and love, has recently decided to build upon this idea of sustainability and curate a line with Boohoo. A line that has been created in tandem with an investigational journey into creating a more sustainable fashion future. As of Sept. 13, 2022, the 46 piece capsule collection has launched and is open for purchase.
In doing so, she states, “Through the creation of this collection, I'm grateful to have had the chance to speak to global experts to learn more about the challenges around sustainability in the fashion industry.”
But within this new team up of Kardashian Barker and Boohoo there has been some backlash as well. It isn’t the best image for a figure like her with her imfamous private jet rides to be promoting sustainable and eco friendly fashion. But in response to this hate, Kourtney stated, “I knew it would get backlash because the two just don't go hand in hand.” She knew there would be backlash, but did not let it stop her from making progress toward a better future.
Not only has Kardashian Barker and Boohoo become invested in sustainability, but Urban Outfitters has also decided to make a difference. It launched Urban Renewal and their One of a Kind Vintage collections, which include pieces such as remade dyed crewnecks and flannels. Unlike Kardashian Barker, Urban Outfitters did not receive very much backlash.
According to Urban Outfitters, they have already “recirculated over 6 million garments, keeping previously loved pieces and fabrics out of the landfill.”
When fashion icons and powerhouses such as these two take an interest in helping the industry become more sustainable, it makes an incredible difference. They both have an immense fan base that will follow in their footsteps, in turn creating a huge shift in our mentality as consumers towards sustainability.
