Many times, I’ve watched a movie and thought, “Wow, she looks good!” or “I wish I had her closet.” Costume design departments are usually skilled at their jobs: communicating the characters’ personal style, fitting the character within their specific scene and setting, and aligning with plot points or fashion-functional opportunities.
Now that fall has arrived, I find it fun to watch some of my favorite cozy, autumn-themed movies that evoke the same feeling as a dirty chai latte and October 18th. Watching these films, I often think, “The costume design team was top-notch!” Let’s talk about them:
Clueless (1995)
Cher's plaid skirt suit is a quintessential fall outfit. The layering of knee-high socks with a stylish blazer perfectly embodies preppy autumn fashion. Her outfits say: “I’m clueless!” in the best way possible.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Andy Sachs’ transformation includes stunning fall-colored coats and chic accessories that showcase high fashion during the colder months. Her style illustrates the impact of outerwear by creating statement looks and providing inspiration for budget-friendly alternatives.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
Holly Golightly’s sophisticated little black dress paired with a classic trench coat is timeless for October and November evenings. The elegance of layering with statement pieces is highly notable.
The Parent Trap (1998)
The twins’ cozy, chic, earthy-toned outfits—especially their apple-picking attire—capture the essence of autumn style. Who better to emphasize comfort and layering in fall fashion while still looking put-together?
Hocus Pocus (1993)
The Sanderson sisters’ colorful and whimsical costumes inspire fun fall fashion choices, especially for Halloween. These women know how to mix spooky and stylish elements in their fall wardrobe.
Little Women (2019)
The March sisters’ layered dresses and cozy shawls reflect both classic and modern interpretations of warm-weather fashion. Little Women is a master class in the resurgence of historic looks and how to incorporate vintage styles into contemporary wardrobes.
