Do It Yourself: Pinterest Boards

Personally, I spend a lot of time in my room. Whether it’s homework, reading, doing my makeup, or just lying in bed, it’s a place I’m in often.

There’s a lot to be said about keeping a room clean, but I think a factor that often gets overlooked is decorating! If we’re going to spend so much time in our bedrooms, why not make them look nice and reflect our personal style, just like we do with our clothes? Space is often a constraint when decorating, especially in college, where bedrooms can be limited in wall or floor area, but a little goes a long way in making a room feel personal.

One of my favorite ways to add a little spice to a bedroom is with pinboards. Pinboards can be purchased pre-made in different styles, but thanks to a TikTok trend, they’re also very easy to make on your own for a low cost.

First, you’ll need a canvas board of any size and some fabric. Fabric allows you to make your pinboard unique, as there are so many different styles, colors, and designs. You can choose to use a single-colored fabric as your base or a patterned fabric with stripes or polka dots. The possibilities are endless.

Next, staple or hot-glue the fabric to the canvas, wrapping the fabric around the edges and attaching it to the back. After that, you can decorate!

What makes the pinboard such a great piece of decor is how customizable it is. Each pinboard can be unique to its creator. The most common way to decorate a pinboard is with pictures of friends and family, but that’s not the only option. Others use printed song lyrics, quotes, a college mascot, or colorful prints that match the pinboard’s aesthetic.

This DIY pinboard allows you to curate it to your aesthetic and personality—it’s all in the details. Other ways to personalize the pinboard include adding ribbons, colorful tacks, or even pearls. Plus, items can be added or removed as your style evolves.
