Charms Of Our Childhood

By Kaitlin McDowell

As I grow up, I begin to realize how much style we had as children, rocking our outfits off the rack at Justice and Claire’s. Emerging trends of friendship bracelets, bows, ruffles, and bright colors are a testament to the clothing trends of the early 2000s and 2010s. Many of these new ways of accessorizing or styling are a more mature reflection of how many of us dressed in our pre-teen years, which I find to be very nostalgic.

One of my favorite reemerging statement pieces is a charm bracelet. I remember being so excited to get new charms for my Charm-It bracelet, whether it was a cupcake, a favorite animal or even a pizza slice. All of these charms had some sort of meaning to me or reflected my personality, so when I saw charm bracelets resurfacing in a classier way this past year, I was so excited to recreate my own personalized jewelry.

Charm bracelets are so special for several reasons. The first reason being that they are all different. Although one can buy matching charms or similar chains, charm bracelets are one of a kind. There are so many charm possibilities that allow for everyone to make them special to themselves. By making a bracelet with charms of one’s favorite color or adding charms that hold meaning to the person, there are endless possibilities to make a unique bracelet.

Some ideas to personalize the bracelet are adding a charm of one’s school logo, sorority letters, or maybe something more playful like a favorite piece of fruit.

Secondly, charm bracelets are an activity! There are so many DIY ways to make a charm bracelet or stores that will help in the process, making this a great activity for friends. It is also a fun idea for a party. Not only do you get to spend time with friends, but you’ll get a memory of your friendship and the time you spent together, as well.

For those not interested in making a charm bracelet, they are also available for purchase and still customizable. Pandora, BaubleBar, and Pura Vida are among the many retailers joining on the charm bracelet making.

No matter how, I encourage everyone to reminisce on their childhood and get a new piece of jewelry in charm bracelet form.
