Bring Back Old Christmas: Reminiscing On How It Used To Be

Now that Christmas is right around the corner, for most people the classic music, special holiday traditions, and Christmas list planning all encompass the ideal mood for the holidays. For me, I still long for the Christmas I knew growing up. The classic Bath & Body Works holiday sets—Vanilla Bean Noel being my favorite every year—the decorated Starbucks cups as I walked through my extravagantly decorated mall with my dad on Christmas Eve, and Bethany Mota’s Christmas hauls…that is what comes to mind when the holidays come around for me. In my mind, this is what the perfect Christmas season would look like, in the eyes of my younger self amidst the 2010s.

First, I would start my day waking up in my rainbow Christmas-lit room, decorated with a small tree on my nightstand. I would make my way downstairs where the house smells of pine tree and cinnamon, Taylor Swift’s Holiday Collection playing, and just last night, we hung up all our favorite ornaments on the tree after dinner. My most eventful debate of the day was whether to drink my Swiss Miss hot chocolate or wait to get my favorite peppermint one that Starbucks just brought back for the holidays. Later on, my sister and I, dressed in our hats and matching coats, made our way to the mall to do last-minute shopping with my dad, of course. We knew we were there to find a gift for our mom, but we insisted on going to Bath & Body Works first just to see what they had. As soon as you enter, you are hit with an overwhelming mixture of peppermint, vanilla, candy apple, and spices, which obviously, for us, was our favorite part. As we were with my dad, we were limited to five minutes in which we had to take in all the amazing feels. That night, we would cuddle up on the couch and watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, of course, with our messily decorated red and green sugar cookies. That Christmas Eve night, we would go to bed dreaming of Twisted Peppermint body mists and what other amazing things Santa would give us tomorrow (we always hoped for more Bath & Body Works sets).
