Beyond The Degree: Why College Majors Don't Define Your Future

With spring registration almost upon us, the topic of majors and classes seems impossible to avoid. The dreaded DAR and BannerWeb logo looms over us (or at least me), and it’s hard not to feel lost. As a strategic communications major, I always seem to get the same question: What are you going to do with that degree when you graduate?

The truth is, I don’t know. I do know I’m only a college freshman, and I have years to figure that out, but it still sits in the back of my mind. I’ve always dreamed of writing for a newspaper or magazine, preferably a notable one, like New York Times, or Rolling Stone. However, those jobs are almost impossible to get. Unlike a lot of my friends in more specific majors, I feel like I have endless roads to take and I’m not sure if I’ll end up at the right one just yet.

Therefore, I’m a big proponent of pushing yourself in college. Whether that be joining as many clubs as you can, or taking a wide array of classes, there are infinite ways to get involved. What really matters is to focus on many things rather than just one major. The diversity of classes you choose is incredibly important because learning many different skills will be what ultimately helps you in the real world.

So, don’t feel judged by your major. Don’t be stressed out about spring registration because every class here at Miami will help you in some way. I registered extremely late for the fall semester and barely got to pick my classes, but I’m proud to say that I’ve gained valuable knowledge and experience in each one. While school might seem like the most important thing in your life right now, there are greater things out there that are waiting for you.
