REFORMATION
The summer of 2024 saw many trends emerge. While some may not carry on into the next season of fall, the recently popular drop-waist dress is here to stay. The timeless and chic look of the drop-waist dress was spotted all summer on red carpets, runways, and on the racks of favorite stores like Aritzia and Zara.
For those who are unfamiliar with the drop-waist style, it features a waistline that is sewn lower than usual, typically at or just above the hips, rather than at the natural waist. This style allows women to accentuate their torso and curves and can be used in both maxi and mini dresses.
This trend can be traced back to the 1920s in flapper dresses and bridal gowns. These dresses strayed from the cinched waist corset style that had been popular for so long.
This style reemerged on the runway in the spring and summer of 2024 but with less fringe and embellishment than those of the 1920s. These dress styles focus on simplicity, as seen on models from fashion houses like JW Anderson and Eudon Choi, to name a few.
Flash forward a few months, and Challengers star Zendaya was spotted on the red carpet of a press event in Rome wearing a custom Loewe Tennis dress, which featured a drop waist, to honor her film.
Another fashion icon, Kendall Jenner, was seen wearing a white Givenchy gown, with a drop waist with a flowy silk skirt below.
While these looks are gorgeous, they cannot be replicated for everyday street wear; however, other versions of the trend are perfect for any occasion. An example of a more casual drop waist dress was seen on Ariana Grande, who sported a nude Tom Ford mini dress at her makeup launch in Paris this past July. For those inspired by Grande’s fashion, this look can be recreated with dresses from Lulus and Zara.
Transitioning into fall, these dresses can be paired with knee-high boots and coats, while still maintaining their chic look.
