This past June, it was confirmed that the autumn classic, Practical Magic, was in the works for a 2025 sequel release. Therefore, it only felt right to take a deep dive into the film's iconic fashion. For those who do not know, the 1998 film Practical Magic follows the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, played by Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, through their tribulations with being from a magical family. Throughout the movie, these polar opposite witchy sisters bring their own unique styles to the screen. From scene to scene and look to look, the Practical Magic wardrobe has tested time, still guiding fashion inspiration to this day.

Starting with Sandra Bullock's character, Sally Owens brings an elevated take to the classic girl-next-door look. Almost every time she graces the screen, she is fit with a classic pair of light wash denim and a simple yet high-quality top. In the spring you can find her with a white crochet tank top or a light and airy cardigan. Then, moving into the chillier autumn weather, she is often seen pairing her Levi’s with a chunky knit sweater or flannel button up. If you want to channel Sally Owens this autumn season, I would recommend focusing on a couple high-quality, timeless pieces that can go with anything. Staying true to a neutral color palette, Sally’s effortless and nonchalant style is very reminiscent of today’s capsule wardrobe.

Gillian Owens is the fiery, spunky younger sister and her outfits are a perfect representation of that. Taking on a darker color palette than her sister, Gillian’s wardrobe is influenced by deep greens, blacks and midnight blues. Opposite Sally’s classic denim jeans, Gillian often opts for a skirt or dress. From her fan-favorite green velvet mini dress to lacey black tank tops and long flowered maxi-skirts, this Owens sister is not afraid to play with different fabrics and patterns. For your Gillian Owens autumn, grab the nearest maxi-skirt and pair it with your favorite velvet top, mixing fabrics and colors in the most chic way.
