You drop your backpack after a long day at school and immediately turn on The 1975. You open Tumblr and browse the endless feed of black and white photos of cigarettes and quotes about teenage romance. Lana Del Rey is your religion. All that matters is your Victoria’s Secret PINK collection and One Direction fan fiction.
If you were a tween or teenager during the early 2010s, you probably resonate with this period of time. Skater skirts, combat boots and graphic tees ruled the fashion world, and now they’re starting to creep into our current trends.
This resurge of Tumblr grunge aesthetic began with many public figures adopting the trend. Olivia Rodrigo is a great example of punk style making its way to the forefront of fashion. We can also see these trends appearing in "Euphoria" by characters Kat and Jules.
Celebrities and influencers are embracing the reemergence of indie grunge. Dark eyes, slicked-back and baggy clothing are actively combatting the popular “clean girl aesthetic” that has taken over social media.
We are seeing these trends come back in full swing with autumn upon us. Our boots are getting chunkier, our makeup has more emphasis on the eyes and skirts have made a huge comeback.
However, the reprise of grunge comes with some haunting memories. Some may say that it’s too reminiscent of Tumblr grunge and its time has passed. Others are all for it. Are you?
