We’ve all been there—endless scrolling and browsing on a streaming site, searching for a film that will please everyone. When you're just about ready to give up, you can never go wrong with a classic: a 2000s romantic comedy. The early 2000s romantic comedy provides the perfect blend of nostalgia, lighthearted humor, unforgettable fashion moments, and, most significantly, the powerful tale that true love overcomes all. Many early 2000s romantic comedies tell notable stories that keep viewers coming back for more. Below is a list of some of the most iconic classics.
13 Going on 30
A true classic! This 2004 flick starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo tells the story of Jenna Rink, a young schoolgirl yearning to be glamorous and popular. Jenna makes a wish on her 13th birthday to be "thirty, flirty, and thriving," and when she wakes up, her wish is granted. Throughout the film, Jenna faces the trials of adult life she has always dreamed of while learning to appreciate and accept herself for who she really is. Along with its uplifting messages, the film showcases an incredible collection of costumes, paying homage to both 1980s and 2000s styles. Jenna’s multicolor Versace dress during the “Thriller” dance scene remains iconic even 20 years later, with numerous copycat styles currently on the market! Silver / @highgardensilver via Pinterest
Bridget Jones’ Diary
"Bridget Jones’ Diary" is another unforgettable classic romantic comedy. The 2001 film boasts a star-studded cast, including Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, and Renée Zellweger. The film follows Bridget Jones, a witty 32-year-old desperate to find love, through the thoughts documented in her diary. It is both hilariously witty and highlights the importance of staying true to yourself, because that version of you is better than you could have ever imagined.
He’s Just Not That Into You
Last but not least, He’s Just Not That Into You. The 2009 film is an undeniably entertaining portrayal of the struggles of romance and dating. The film is unique in that it follows the storylines of multiple couples who seemingly have nothing to do with each other, yet they are all connected in the end. The main
protagonist, Gigi, portrayed by Ginnifer Goodwin, is a
hopeless romantic who falls under the guidance of a bar owner, Alex, rooted
in realism. Through this friendship, Alex teaches Gigi that if a man is interested in her, he will make it known, hence the title. This film uses the traditional structure of a romantic comedy while providing an engaging multi-plot narrative.
